Mitigation

Landslide risk mitigation strategies can be planned through reducing vulnerability to infrastructure and human life, or by reducing the landslide or debris flow intensity (Jakob, 2016). Reducing vulnerability can be managed through:

  • Reinforcing buildings;
  • Raising building construction levels;
  • Adjusting the development layout; and
  • Changing the land use zoning.

Long-term mitigation measures that may reduce landslide or debris flow intensity include the construction of:

  • Slope geometry modification;
  • Reinforcement measures such as anchors;
  • Drainage systems to reduce pore-pressure;
  • Berms and barriers; and
  • Surface erosion control systems such as slope grassing and steel mesh.
