Education:
I am currently in my last year of my second degree, which is in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. During my studies, I have picked up an interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Hence, I took a few course in Cognitive Science, which helped in understanding of how several diverse disciplines can intertwine for the advancement of AI and computer science in general.
For my first degree, I specialized in Accounting at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. I enjoyed the knowledge gained from this degree. However, I wished to express more of my creative side without going to jail (creative tax?). I hope to utilize my business background when an opportunity of Product Manager arises.
Work Experience:
During my four-month internship at Mobify, given that it is a start-up company, I was exposed to a wide variety of tasks. As a software developer, I have learned lots of real-world application that I would not have learned from school. I was also fortunate enough to be entrusted with Product Management tasks as I have expressed interest in learning about the role. Some main take-aways are:
- ReactJS and React-Redux
- Strict code peer-review process
- Enhance JavaScript code quality
- Node Package Management knowledge
- Great overview of project bundles
- How Progressive Web Applications and Accelerated Mobile Pages work
- Product Management responsibilities: leading sprint plannings, leading retrospectives, leading quarter planning and kick-off
During my six-month internship at SAP Walldorf, Germany, I had the pleasure of communicating and gathering end-users requirements and design a system that will aid in their day-to-day tasks. Through using SAPUI5 library (JavaScript) and SAP HANA (in-memory database), I was able to create systems that decreased end-users’ manual effort and time spent on tasks.
Personal:
As mentioned on the home page, I truly enjoy travelling. A big part of when I travel is I try to understand the culture of the countries I visit. A great way to start to understand the culture is through food. Some people may think “You just like to eat”. That’s true. BUT, traditional food speaks a lot about the agriculture and preferences of the land and people respectively. Different climate and landscape yield different products.
I was born in Beijing, China and my grandparents still live there thus I often travel back to visit them. Here is a list of the cities/countries I have visited:
-
- Korea: Seoul, Busan
- Japan: Tokyo
- Mexico: Puerto Vallarta
- USA: West Coast, NY
- The Bahamas
- Germany: Black Forest, Munich, Berlin
- England: London
- Scotland: Edinburgh, Glasgow
- Austria
- France: Paris
- Italy
- Switzerland
- Singapore
- Malaysia
- Indonesia: Bali
- Thailand
There are probably a couple more that I forgot to include. There are so many more places I’d love to visit! This world is just so full of beautiful natural and created sites to see. And of course, delicious food to taste.
