“I am from” poem

“I am From”

I am from yuca

From vegetation and clean air

And the Pacific Ocean

I am from rocks and cobwebs

Grey and white, big and small

I can hear the rocks being kicked

From Compassion

From Carmela

From Christina

From Chamomile

and Lettuce

I am from the Pot

Heating

Black Beans

Carrots

and getting together when it matters most

Hi, my name is Roberto and I am a fourth year political science student. I am taking LAST 303 to you learn more about Indigenous food within Latin America. I have eaten Cuy which is a traditional Andean dish within the mountains of Ecuador, near the city of Quito. I look forward to the rest of this course!

I love the image of “rocks and cobwebs,” Roberto. And the final verse of your poem is so bittersweet–“and getting together when it matters most”… it makes me miss the ability to get together with people.

We’ll chat a little bit about cuy during our Quechua section. I’ve had it as well… I’ll be interested to hear if you enjoyed it! (Spoiler alert: it’s not my favorite protein :))

Hi Roberto! I thought your poem was beautifully written, and descriptive.

One of the challenges I faced while completing this assignment was word choice, in order to give my reader the most information in the limited word count we had. You did a excellent job of utilizing the right words to convey your message.

    Great job!
