Hello Everyone! My name is Nicole Mendoza and I am a fifth year political science with international relations student. While I was born in Canada, my family comes from Mexico. I was drawn to this class because I recently completed a thesis on populism in Latin America. In addition, I want to learn more about the indigenous groups in the country most of my family calls home.
I am very excited to learn more about indigenous groups as a Mexican-Canadian woman. My hope is to be able to open my horizons and understand indigenous thought beyond Canada’s borders. My hope for this class is to engage in fruitful discussion on major topics through an indigenous lens.
The first class offered a great intro into how we will be approaching the Latin American region. I am very excited to learn about how power and organisational structures operate within indigenous communities in pre-colonial era. I am also eager to learn about how indigenous groups within the region differ from those based in Anglo-America.
Overall I am excited to be a part of this conversation throughout the term!

Hi Nicole!! Your thesis on populism sounds so cool oh my goodness. I’m also super interested in the difference between Indigenous groups in varying regions. I’m super excited to hear your inputs on Latin American Indigenous studies and all the discussions we have in class!
Hey Nicole, nice to meet you. I second Alayna’s opinion of your thesis sounding cool- what an interesting topic! This class was interesting to me for similar reasons that you mentioned, especially the point about learning more about Indigenous groups beyond the Anglo-American lens.
