I believe that all children deserve access to a great education, and I believe that public schools should be the benchmark for great education in our communities. In my own classroom, the ways that I can provide my students with equity of education is by varying the ways I teach and the methods I use for assessment.
One successful example of this was allowing the students to create their own math test as a class. Each student was given the opportunity to submit their own question for the test, which I compiled together. Not only did the students have an opportunity to contribute to the way they would be assessed, but they would be sure to know the answer to one question on the test.
I also planned and provided students with the opportunity to assess themselves, and to show their work through story, video, dramatic skit, or even board game.
