In my teaching, I want to make sure students aware of their own learning and aware of the ways in which they are changing. I designed several self-reflection components to units for this purpose.
Students in my class also created a class rubric together so we could explicitly outline what appropriate classroom behaviour looked and sounded like. In the example below, a student has been asked to highlight areas on the rubric where he thinks his own behaviour lies, then was asked to write a short paragraph reflecting on his behaviour and outlining how he will make changes in the future.
In a HACE lesson on digital citizenship, I asked students to fill out their own footprint with things that they would like to find out online about themselves and our world in 10 years. This student drew some simple photos that really showed the goals he has for himself in the future, and some of the ways he expects to change as he learns and grows older.
