Course Description

English 301 is a technical writing course that is offered online through UBC. This course teaches students to write in professional, technical, and business contexts as well as improve workplace communication, whether it be online or face to face. English 301 offers important information that will be crucial to know when working in a professional or business setting. Students will complete a variety of assignments such as memos, proposals, emails, and formal reports, as well as get the chance to work with fellow classmates through online discussions and peer-review. The course is structured in a way where the students work independently, with peers, as well as with the instructor, which will build more efficient time management, self-editing skills, communication skills, and teamwork. The course is divided into four units, each containing assignments and lessons based on that unit. Unit one introduces the course content as well as the textbook and prepares students for the process of creating a formal report. Unit two focuses on writing formal reports and proposals, along with resume building and progress reports. In this unit, students will also work on peer-reviewing proposals that fellow classmates have created. Unit three is comprised of completing research for a formal report and revising your formal report. Lastly, in unit four, students will complete an application package along with finish a final copy of their formal report.

After completing this course, I hope to gain more knowledge about professional writing that I can carry with me throughout the rest of my career. I wish to further develop my skills that show that I can clearly communicate my ideas while still remaining professional and respectful. This course will allow me to improve my strengths in writing while also allowing me to work on my weaker areas of professional writing and communication.
