{"id":220,"date":"2020-08-17T15:53:14","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T22:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/laurelbrinton\/?page_id=220"},"modified":"2020-08-17T15:56:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T22:56:13","slug":"engl-322","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/laurelbrinton\/teaching\/engl-322\/","title":{"rendered":"ENGL 322"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Stylistics (3 credits)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Description<\/strong><br \/>\nThis course will introduce students to methods of analyzing the language of literary texts from a linguistic perspective.<\/p>\n<p>It will begin with the question \u201cWhat is \u2018style\u2019 and how can it be identified?\u201d Among the other questions to be taken up\u2014from the perspective of language\u2014will be some of the following: \u201cHow is cohesion achieved in texts\u201d \u201cWhat linguistic forms are used for the representation of speech and thought and what are the literary effects of each?\u201d \u201cHow are elements foregrounded or backgrounded in a text?\u201d \u201cWhat place do presuppositions or inferences have in literary interpretation?\u201d \u201cWhat devices of evaluation can be used in a text?\u201d \u201cWhat means can be used to organize narratives on a global level?\u201d \u201cWhat insights are gained by analyzing literary works from the perspective of speech acts or politeness phenomena?\u201d \u201cHow does deictic point of view influence the meaning of literary texts?\u201d \u201cTo what extent does dramatic dialogue correspond to real dialogue\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of time limitations, the course will focus on prose and drama, but poetry will not be entirely excluded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Required Texts<\/strong><br \/>\nToolan, Michael, <em>Language in Literature: an Introduction to Stylistics<\/em><br \/>\nShort, Mick, <em>Exploring the Language of Poems, Plays and Prose<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong><br \/>\nSome background in language or linguistics (English 329, Linguistics 200\/201 or 420, or the equivalent) is recommended, but not required.
