Why get a degree when you can just Snapchat?

Why get a degree when you can just by LaurenChimko

  • 2013 Sauder BCOM graduates (that took part in this survey) in marketing and sales had an average annual income of $40,080.
  • Jerome Jarre is making $35,000 for a single Snapchat (AdWeek).

Let me rephrase…
This guy:

jjvine

is making almost as much as this guy might make in one full year:

gradagain…By sending a single Snapchat.

Oh, and he makes about $25,000/Vine, which is essentially a 6-second smartphone-quality video.

This, my friends, is the power of social media. Marketers are taking advantage of every channel possible to reach consumers. Jarre has worked with General Electric, Trident and Budweiser, just to name a few. He created the first Vine to be played as a commercial at the SuperBowl (2014). Wherever the consumer is, the marketers will go. These brands have done a fine job of capitalizing on the size of Jarre’s following: 7.2M followers on Vine and some 2M on Snapchat. His “snaps” can be viewed by up to 1M followers in under an hour, not only capturing their attention, but also entertaining them. By teaming up with Jarre, General Electric can now be viewed as cutting edge (regarding social trends) and fun. GE is a major multinational conglomerate corporation that manufactures appliances, lighting, power systems…Not a very sexy industry. But all of a sudden I think they’re pretty cool, thanks to their clever use of social media.

What other mediums will marketers intercept to send branded messages our way?

Here at Sauder we take entire classes on how to write the best possible LinkedIn summary. This is Jarre’s: “I LOVE LIFE LIKE CRAZY.” If that’s not the spirit, I don’t know what is.
