Hi!
My name is Lani and as what some of you might notice from my writing style, I’m not a native English speaker nor my home country uses English as the first language. To be precise, I come from Indonesia, a small country located in the South-East Asia that is famous for its beautiful landscape, exotic rainforests, and delish traditional food! Currently I am a third-year Mathematics student under UBC’s Faculty of Science, preparing for my first work term in this upcoming fall.
My passion for math came out a bit out of nowhere as during high school, I was type of student who studied math out of obligation to please my parents. However, my first Calculus class that I took in a college in Canada was so overwhelming that it completely blew my mind. Like a typical maiden in love, during my first year I was so engrossed in the study that I would devote most of my time to study math instead of other subjects, which needed more attention, grade wise.
In 2015, I had the opportunity to work as a math tutor in the college I attended before transferring to UBC for a year, and I must say I had a blast time there! The enjoyment from meeting diverse students with each different personality, hence different way perceiving each theory, the struggle to come up with different explanations for each student, and the sense of fulfilment when the students understood the concept they had been struggling with before created a memorable and exciting experience that gave quite an impact on my career choice as now I’m considering pursing a degree in education after finishing my bachelor degree. However, while still having the opportunity to, I would like to explore all other possible careers I could do with my math background during my last two years in university before deciding what to do after graduation.
During my free time I usually like to take a long walk, listen to music, watch movies or some random videos (especially hamsters and cats!), and draw.
