{"id":212,"date":"2009-10-01T09:09:35","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T17:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/?p=212"},"modified":"2010-11-10T10:55:53","modified_gmt":"2010-11-10T18:55:53","slug":"moderating-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/moderating-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Moderating Comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Step 1:<\/h2>\n<p>In order to moderate comments, the first thing you must do is log into the Learning Commons and get into the Dashboard by following the instructions that were laid out in this <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/2009\/09\/24\/how-to-login-and-edit-pages\/\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: If a comment is posted directly from a Learning Commons page, an email notification will be sent to the admins and the page author. However, no email notification will be sent when a comment is replied from the backend of WordPress.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2:<\/h2>\n<p>The image below shows the Learning Commons WordPress dashboard. If you look down the sidebar on the left, you may see an orange bubble with a number within it. This number indicates the number of comments that are still awaiting moderation\u2014either being approved, marked as spam or deleted.\u00a0 To the right of the sidebar is widget called &#8220;Recent Comments&#8221; where you can see the most recent comments. It is best to click on the &#8220;Comments&#8221; button on the sidebar to get a full view of them, rather than just the latest listings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-216\" title=\"commentsEg\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg.JPG\" alt=\"commentsEg\" width=\"652\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg.JPG 704w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Steps 3:<\/h2>\n<p>Click on the &#8220;Comments&#8221; section in the sidebar. We have a few options to undergo the moderation of these comments.\u00a0 Comments that have not been moderated will have a light cream yellow colour while comments that have been taken care of will have a white background.\u00a0 To see all comments that have not been moderated, click &#8220;Pending&#8221; at the top and in the example below, we see that there are 8 comments that are pending.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg2.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-217\" title=\"commentsEg2\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg2.JPG\" alt=\"commentsEg2\" width=\"609\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After clicking on the Pending button, you should be in a page that has all the comments with a cream yellow background (the ones that are awaiting moderation).\u00a0 If you hover your mouse cursor over a certain comment, you will see a bar of options that relate to that specific comment pop up under the comment itself.\u00a0 In the image below, the bar that pops up when I hovered over the first comment is in the red box.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg3i.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-220\" title=\"commentsEg3i\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg3i.JPG\" alt=\"commentsEg3i\" width=\"407\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg3i.JPG 407w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/commentsEg3i-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From this menu bar, there are 6 options.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose the <strong>approve<\/strong> the message, select approve and it will go into the &#8220;Approved&#8221; comments section and will no longer show up as pending.<\/p>\n<p>If you mark it as <strong>spam <\/strong>then it will no longer show up on the site and will be stored in the &#8220;Spam&#8221; section.\u00a0 Only use this if there is some irrelevant comment that doesn&#8217;t apply to the Learning Commons or any sort of advertisement of some company or product.\u00a0 Since the Learning Commons is an academic site, all comments are expected to relate to the post and be of an academic nature.\u00a0 If this is not the case, mark it as spam right away even if it is borderline and get a judgment of whether it actually is spam from higher authorities on the team after the fact.\u00a0 We could always approve these comments from the &#8220;Spam&#8221; section at a later date, where they are stored, if need be.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose the <strong>delete, <\/strong>then it will simply delete that comment without any other sort of consequence.\u00a0 These comments will not be backed up, so be sure that you want to delete something before doing so.\u00a0 If the comment is not appropriate or whatever, mark it as spam instead of deleting, so we can keep that commenter as reference.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose <strong>edit, <\/strong>you can actually change the wording in the comment of the original poster.\u00a0 If you choose to edit a comment, be sure to check in with a supervisor before hand and also make note that the comment was edited by typing for example, &#8220;&#8212;&#8211;This comment was edited by a Student Development Assistant&#8212;&#8212;-&#8221; at the bottom of the post.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick edit<\/strong> is essentially the same as edit, but allows you to be able to edit the comment in the same area as the other &#8220;pending&#8221; comments.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to <strong>reply<\/strong> to the comment, proceed to <strong>Step 4<\/strong>. Otherwise you can skip to <strong>Step 5<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4<\/h2>\n<p>You can <strong>reply<\/strong> to a comment in two ways: publicly or privately.<\/p>\n<p>To reply <strong>publicly<\/strong>, you can pretty much answer the question or statement that was made and it will appear as a comment under the posters comment, so that all users can view it.\u00a0 This will make your job easier because you will only have to answer the question once and not multiple times for multiple people!<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Ensure your replies are approved because they are acting as comments as well for them to appear on the site. If they are not approved, they will be like any other pending comment and will not appear!<\/p>\n<p>You can reply <strong>privately<\/strong> maybe because the answer is not appropriate to be presented in public. No options are directly available on WordPress for replying comments privately. Therefore you have to reply via email. The email address are right below the author\u2019s name on each comment, shown in the picture below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-247 alignleft\" title=\"comment email\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-email1.jpg\" alt=\"comment email\" width=\"577\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-email1.jpg 824w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-email1-300x69.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After you reply privately, let others know that the comment has been replied. To do this, <strong>edit<\/strong> the comment that you\u2019ve replied to, and add the line \u201cReplied privately by (your name goes here)\u201d to the author name field. An example is shown in the picture blow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-248 alignleft\" title=\"comment replied\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-replied.jpg\" alt=\"comment replied\" width=\"493\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-replied.jpg 822w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/leapauthors\/files\/2009\/10\/comment-replied-300x107.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 5:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Good work<\/strong> and always try to be as prompt as possible with comments!\u00a0 If there are any further questions regarding the comments, make sure to get in contact with a supervisor because this is an essential service on the Learning Commons and the better job of answering comments well and timely that is done, the more satisfied people there will be!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Step 1: In order to moderate comments, the first thing you must do is log into the Learning Commons and get into the Dashboard by following the instructions that were laid out in this post.
