Learning analytics can be used in personalizing students’ learning experience by collecting data on learners’ individual needs and interests. A specific area that learning analytics can provide opportunities for adaptive learning is in identifying areas of difficulty for students and recommending relevant learning activities to help improve performance. Not only is this helpful for students, but for teachers as well, who want to understand where their students are struggling and help facilitate grouping of students based on complementary strengths. Another area that learning analytics has been employed is in providing micro level feedback. For example, one program provides customized hints at each incorrect step of a learning exercise. Furthermore, institutions are using data gathered from past students’ performance trends to make individualized suggestions for possible courses that may be of interest.
