{"id":1386,"date":"2021-04-20T13:22:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T20:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/learningdesign\/?p=1386"},"modified":"2023-12-07T17:36:54","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T00:36:54","slug":"core-competencies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/learningdesign\/2021\/04\/20\/core-competencies\/","title":{"rendered":"Core Competencies"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em><strong>in brief:<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<h3>Communication, Thinking and Personal Social Competencies<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>are expected to be integrated across subject areas.<\/li>\n<li>are not formally assessed &#8216;by the teacher&#8217; in the same way as curricular content and competencies but are essential skills that underlie all teaching and learning.<\/li>\n<li>teachers support students in understanding, developing and self-assessing the core competencies across the curriculum.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/competencies\/resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Resources<\/em><\/strong> to support implementation,<\/a> including a video series, are available on the BC Ministry of Ed website. There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/sites\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/files\/pdf\/assessment\/developing-and-supporting-student-reflection-and-self-assessment-of-the-core-competencies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF file to support <strong>assessment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curriculum.gov.bc.ca\/competencies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Profiles<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>exist to support understanding where your students lie with respect to the competencies (these are not &#8216;grade or age level&#8217; profiles but descriptors of students as they progress to increasingly sophisticated stages of competency)\n<ul>\n<li>An analogy from a PD session that may help you understand the profiles: A &#8216;Profile 1&#8217; in Personal Social (Social Responsibility) might show an individual just beginning to develop recognition outside of self; a &#8216;Profile 8&#8217; illustration might describe someone akin to &#8220;Ghandi&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/learningdesign\/files\/2021\/04\/I-Can-Statements-1.docx\">I-Can-Statements-1 <\/a><\/em><\/strong><em>(courtesy of the North Van School District) <\/em>can help in planning to integrate the core competencies into learning experiences. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/nvsd44curriculumhub.ca\/core-competencies\/i-can-statements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NVSD44 website<\/a> for additional resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Self Assessment\/Reflection<\/h3>\n<p>Teachers are expected to support students in developing their core-comptencies and self-assessing their growth. This often involves self-assessments as pre-, during- and post-teaching opportunities and are often embedded in self-assessment rubrics, proficiency scales, reflective writing and in performance assessment. Here is one example of a self-assessment I&#8217;ve adapted and used with UBC TCs (credit to Esquimalt High School for the original). I love that this one is quite open ended and includes sample statements on the reverse side to help build student (and teacher) understanding of the CCs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/learningdesign\/files\/2021\/04\/Self-Reflection-core-competencies-map.pdf\">Self-Reflection-core competencies map<\/a> (pdf)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/learningdesign\/files\/2021\/04\/Self-Reflection-core-competencies-map.docx\">Self-Reflection-core competencies map<\/a> (word Doc)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And this one, is more appropriate for both elementary and secondary students. They are worth a follow!<\/p>\n<h3>Additional Resources<\/h3>\n<p>Teachers and Support teachers in School Districts are also developing their own sets of resources; many of which are shared freely online.
