Variables and Sample

The Variables: Time needed to commute from campus and the average time spent studying per week

Variables that will be tested:

1.) Time needed to travel to and from campus

– measured in intervals of 15 minutes

-measured in whether a student lives more than 60 minutes from campus or less

2.) Number of hours a student spends studying per week

– measured in hours

Other variables requiring consideration (not to be tested for this study, but may influence our results):

1.) The number of courses a student is registered in (measured by number of courses a student takes)

2.) Year of study  (a student’s year level)

3.) Major (a student’s study major)

4.) Gender (male or female)

5.) Attendance status (whether or not the student is considered a full-time or part-time student)

6.) Number of days they attend school per week (measured in days)

7.) Method of Transportation (whether or not the student commutes via car, bus, walk, bicycle)

8.) Extracurricular activities (Whether or not they work or volunteer, and if so include frequency)

Sample Description

  • Population:  All undergraduate students that attend Canadian universities that have on and off campus housing options available

  • Sample: LFS 252 students that attend lecture and are registered in LFS 252 course

We will measure and will base our hypothesis on a sample of only students in LFS 252 that attend class. Our sample represents only students from LFS 252 that show up to class rather than the population of all LFS students because not all LFS 252 students attend class. Therefore, our study benefits from sample analysis rather than population analysis. It is impossible to sample entire population since there will always be some people who cannot make it to or skip class.
