Introduction

The following e-Portfolio contains Group 14′s final project, Effect of Class Size on Student Academic Performance, dedicated to the course LFS 252 Land, Food, and Community:  Quantitative Data Analysis for the academic year of 2013/2014. The members of Group 14 are as followed: Deborah Chen, Yi-Chun Chen, Warren Fu, Ying Huang, Jerry Sun and Ning Yan

Initiated in February of 2014, this project is chiefly concerned with the impact of class size on student learning at University of British Columbia. Our hypothesis is that larger class size has an adverse effect on their academic performance. To test this, we will first perform stratified sampling on undergraduate classes using five major academic disciplines. Data collection took place in March of 2014, and contains contents exclusively obtained from UBC Grade Distribution, an online database provided by the Office of Planning and Institutional Research. From there, we will divide the sample into 2 categories: classes consisting of 50 students or less and classes of 100 students or more. We will use the class average as an indicator of student performance and run T-test to determine which hypothesis to reject. Afterwards, we will perform regression analysis on the entire sample to test our hypothesis about the slope.
