This month, the Research Commons is offering 1-on-1 consultations on Thesis Formatting, Citation Management, and SPSS support, along with Grad Student Writing workshops, and more! Work Together with the R Study Group

Join the UBC R Study Group and learn how to code and collaborate with others on open science projects. Graduate students, scientists and researchers are welcome to attend weekly drop-in meetings every Friday at 1-2pm in Koerner 153. Upcoming Sessions: Co-Working Session June 3 Work on your coding project, and get help, feedback and support. R Utility Belt: Text Manipulation with Stirngr and Lubridate June 10 An introduction to analyzing text in R.

 

Citation Management Support

Could you use some help with managing your citations, and compiling your bibliography? Book a 1-on-1 consultation with our Citation Management expert for help with Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero! Get tips on organizing your research, formatting bibliographies, and creating in-text citations with the click of a button! Citation Management consults are available during the following times:

  • Tuesday, 4-6pm
  • Friday, 9-11am

Data Analysis Software

Need help analysing your data? Book a 1-on-1 consultation with our SPSS expert for help with using SPSS to do your statistical analysis.  SPSS consults are available at the following time:

  • Friday, 1-2pm

Thesis Formatting Support

Do you need some help with formatting your thesis? Register today for one of our weekly two-hour workshops that cover the basics of the thesis template, and useful resources for thesis writing and formatting. Graduate Student Writing Group

Better writing starts with more writing. These summer drop-in sessions, facilitated by Brooklyn Kemp from the UBC Writing Centre, will help you get motivated and inspired to write in a group setting, surrounded by like-minded peers. Weekly sessions run Wednesdays (3-5pm) in Koerner Library, Room 216 or 153. Copyright Summer Workshops

The Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office will be holding a series of Copyright Education workshops over the summer.  Workshops will focus on author and creator rights; copyright in the classroom; copyright in the digital environment; copyright and conference presentations; and scholarly publishing, funder mandates, and open access. These workshops will be of particular interest to graduate students, faculty, instructional designers and anyone else who participates in research, scholarship and teaching at the post-secondary level. Upcoming Copyright Workshops: Copyright in the Classroom Friday, June 3 | 10-11am Find out about screening films in class, distributing readings to students, using someone else’s images in presentation slides or online course pages, and more! Copyright and Conference Presentations Friday, June 10 | 10-11am Get an overview of copyright considerations for conference presenters and organizers at this specialized workshop.

Pixelating: A Digital Humanities Mixer

Every Thursday | 12-2pm | Koerner Rm 153

UBC scholars are welcome to attend our drop-in sessions of Pixelating: A Digital Humanities Mixeran opportunity for DH scholars across campus to meet colleagues, talk tools, brainstorm ideas and network with others who use digital tools to explore and visualize their research. Join us in Koerner 153, Thursdays at 12-2pm.

Join the Mozilla Science Lab for this two-day sprint event that will see researchers, coders, librarians and international participants from around the world joining forces to collaboratively hack on open science and open data projects

Take part in this 1-day hackathon-style Bug BBQ and help perfect the next version of Software Carpentry’s lessons by closing issues and finishing PRs. Lessons will be published with a DOI so all contributors will get a citation for their hard work. This event will take place on June 13 at 10am-4pm in Koerner room 153. Lessons Include: The Unix Shell Version Control with Git Version Control with Mercurial Using Databases and SQL Programming with Python Programming with R R for Reproducible Scientific Analysis Programming with MATLAB Automation and Make Instructor Training
