Tips and Tricks for Formatting Your Thesis: Little Things Mean A Lot!

Are you worried about getting your thesis/dissertation into the format required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies? Would you like to know more about how to use the formatting features in Microsoft Word? Research Commons staff will help you with your questions about the nuts and bolts of formatting: tables of contents, page layout, numbering, headings, front matter, and more! As well, find out more about the resources that are available to help you in writing your thesis/dissertation. Graduate students at any stage of the writing process are welcome; some prior knowledge of Microsoft Word will be helpful.

Ethics and RISe Unite: A Step by Step Workshop on How to Complete your BREB Application

This interactive workshop is designed to help you understand the ethical issues present in your research while at the same time giving you hands on assistance navigating the UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board (BREB) online application process. You may start your BREB application in the workshop or continue to work on one that you have already started. Those who are not ready to start their own application will be directed to create a practice application in the session. The workshop will be facilitated by a member of the BREB administration and the UBC RISe team (computer interface). The session will be approximately 1.5 hours. Facilitators: Snezana Milosevic and Jean Ruiz.

Join us for a research data management planning workshop designed to help researchers incorporate some best practices for data management into their own research environment. We will address such questions as: What standards for file naming and metadata will you use? What repository will you deposit your data into? Do you need permission to share your data? In addition, we will discuss critical components of data management planning, provide hands-on practice with methods to name and organize files, review helpful data management resources, and give you a framework to develop your own data management plan. We welcome all researchers; faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and others.

The Master’s Affiliated Fellowships application materials and instructions are now available on the www.grad.ubc.ca website: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/affiliated-fellowships

The deadline for all Master’s Affiliated Fellowship applications to be submitted directly to the applicant’s graduate program is 1 December, 2014. This matches the Canada-wide Tri-Agency deadline for CGSM applicants to submit to the CGSM portal. CGSM and direct Master’s Affiliated applicants are all considered for Affiliated funding, and the common deadline for applications ensures equity of application preparation time for all students.

The Fall 2014 CGSM application (2015-2016 competition) is now available on the Tri-Agency portal (http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/pg-cs/cgsm-bescm_eng.asp).

The deadline across Canada for applications is 8pm Eastern Time, 1 December, 2014. After this time, the research portal will close, and there will be no opportunity to re-open the application. This is the deadline for all application materials, including reference letters. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that their references are submitted on time.

Common Questions and Answers:

Q – Do I have to upload all of my undergraduate transcripts?

A – Yes, all post-secondary transcripts must be included, even if no degree was obtained or sought at a particular university (e.g. transfer or exchange credits).

Q – Can I upload a web transcript?

A – No. All uploaded transcripts must be official (originally issued by the registrar).

Q – What if I do not have a first-class average as determined by my current/previous institution(s) in each of my last two years of full-time study?

A – Your graduate program may consider forwarding your application to the university-level competition as an exceptional case, but this award opportunity is highly competitive, and they must be able to put forward a strong justification for why you should be considered despite not meeting this criteria.
