Agricultural Institute of Canada Foundation Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship Deadline for Application – October 31, 2014

The Agricultural Institute of Canada Foundation invites applications for The Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarship.

This scholarship is open to agricultural science students from the province of Alberta. Students may be enrolled in any post-secondary institution within or outside the province of Alberta. In 2014, two awards will be granted:

  • $8,000 Masters level (1)
  • $13,000 PhD level (1)

Candidates must hold Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence status in Canada and be enrolled in their graduate program for at least one semester beyond the application deadline.
 

Deadline for applications is October 31, 2014

Scholarships are awarded on the following basis, but not necessarily placed in order of importance:

  1. Academic achievement
  2. Areas of study
  3. Leadership
  4. Career interests
  5. Letters of recommendation

Faculty Vehicle Parking Change

Due to difficulties with trucks delivering goods to the Frank Howard building the larger EOS vehicles have now been assigned to the two parking spaces closest to MacMillan building.  All the other parking spots still remain open for the use of our Faculty vehicles.  If you have any questions regarding this change please feel free to contact Martin Hilmer at:  mire@mail.ubc.ca

Warm wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you, your kin and circles of friends. We’re hoping you’re excited about the various events we have going this October. There’s two Coffee socials (one later today!), an epic Laser Tag event in (10 days) and our Ghastliest Halloween Party Ever!! Not to mention Pro Football at the beginning of November! May the good times get better!

GSS Social & Recreational

We’re a Go! Thanks to students who heeded the deadline, GSS Figure skating and Iceskating classes are officially ON! This gives the stragglers among you an opportunity to join in as we still have a few spots! Class begins on October 17th for 6 Fridays after that, between 12.30-1.30pm.

– The 1st Annual GSS League of Lasers is coming up fast on October 18th! The League is an outdoor laser tag tournament pitting 32 Teams against each other. Choose your team wisely! Recruit from across UBC’s student body, staff, AND faculty! Team up and Register in person or at our website with just $60/team of four. We can match you up with teammates too if you like!

– The BC Lions take the Calgary Stampeders on November 7th, will you be there?! Our DISCOUNTED Tickets include seats in Touchdown Corner of BC Place, a tailgate party at Koerner’s, a Roundtrip bus ride, and even more goodies! Time’s ebbing away kids, just ebbing away…

Ever wondered who the other grads at Vancouver General Hospitals or Women and Children’s are and what they do there? Join your GSS Executives and the off campus crew at our GSS coffee social this evening! (October 8th), between 4-6pm, at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Meet us at the atrium of the Jack Bell Research Centre on 2660 Oak St. (click to see map). We’ll bring the coffee and snacks, and some GSS swag. Catch us up on how life at UBC is treating you.

Final Call to graduate students in the sciences/engineering. Women in Engineering Wants You! The organization works to foster collaboration and build a community for women in that “non-traditional” field. Community does not happen by itself.

Make a plan already! Because friends don’t let friends hang out in the lab/library/office all day.

To help UBC graduate students with the statistical elements of their thesis work, The Statistical Consulting And Research Laboratory (SCARL) in the Department of Statistics at UBC is please to offer limited statistical consulting to UBC graduate students at no charge. A Statistical review of the project before the data is collected can prevent problems that might arise after the data is collected.

Registration Now Open for the November 9, 15, 16 Instructional Skills Workshop

Registration is open for the Instructional Skills Workshop November 9, 15, 16, 2014.  Please note that participants must be able to attend the entire 24 hour workshop.  Please find attached the new policy for registration in the ISW.

The Instructional Skills Workshop is an internationally recognized program and students receive transcript notation for their participation.  It is a 3-day intensive workshop that develops participant’s teaching skills and confidence.  It is appropriate for first time teachers or those with years of experience.  Join the thousands of students who have taken this workshop.
