The UBC Travel office has made a number of Delta Airlines “Sky Bonus Points” available to graduate students, to support travel related to their studies / research. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is organizing a competition to select recipients of the travel points available.

Eligibility

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must be:

  • Full-time, registered UBC graduate students at either UBC campus during the intended period of travel
  • Travelling (i) for research related to their graduate program or (ii) to present a poster or paper at an official conference or symposium
  • Able to book their flight with Delta Airlines after 21 August 2015 and before December 31, 2015, and travel within 12 months of booking. Sky Bonus Points are available for every geographic region in the world, though there may be limitations for specific destinations. (UBC-O students will have to make their own way to Vancouver, as Delta Airlines does not fly out of Kelowna)
  • At the time of application, in the 2nd year of their Master’s program or in the 3rd, 4th or 5th year of their doctoral program
  • Able to cover the rest of their travel costs (this funding opportunity covers airfare only; students must pay all taxes, fees ($90 to $500+ in total), and remaining travel costs (accommodation, food, conference registration, etc.). If eligible for both, students may combine this funding opportunity with an application for support from the Graduate Student Travel Fund.

Evaluation Criteria

Recipients will be selected to receive funding on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Significance of travel opportunity to student’s professional development and/or collaborative research opportunities
  • Significance of conference to student’s field and particular research interests
  • Preference will be given to those with accepted conference presentations or confirmed research arrangements (e.g., access to resources or collaborative relationships at destination)
  • Preference will be given to those without significant scholarship funding

  • Application form
  • Conference abstract or research plan (maximum 1 page)
  • Confirmation that paper or poster has been accepted or confirmation of research collaboration arrangements at destination, if applicable (can be in the form of an email from conference organizers / research collaborators)
  • Supporting letter from supervisor or graduate advisor detailing the significance of the travel opportunity. Must be signed by letter writer – electronic signatures are acceptable. (maximum 2 pages)

Complete application files must be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by 4:00pm on Friday, July 31, 2015. Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered.

Adjudication Procedures

Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by Friday, August 21, 2015.
