Sexual Assault & Harassment Awareness Conference

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

9:30am-2pm GSS Penthouse, Thea Koerner House

6371 Crescent Road, UBC Vancouver

Join the conversation, speak out, and stand up against sexual assault and harassment. You can help end the violence.

Not On My Campus is a one-day conference that engages graduate students on the issues of sexual assault and harassment awareness, regardless of gender.

Join us for a movie screening of Brave Miss World and a discussion with the film director on the trials faced by survivors and the support needed for them to speak out.

A panel discussion follows in the afternoon on UBC’s own campus resources for services, support, and accessibility to stay safe, spread awareness, and support victims through their time of need.

Federal Budget 2016 & Its Impact on Post-Secondary Students

On March 22nd, the Government of Canada announced its federal budget 2016. The GSS is glad to see a commitment to invest in post-secondary and indigenous education.

The budget partially addresses asks the GSS, in conjunction with its partners in CASA, has been advocating for over past years. Improvements include an expansion of the federal grants program for students from low and middle income backgrounds, increased flexibility in student loan repayments as well as a commitment of $8.4 billion in indigenous education.

For more details regarding the impact on post-secondary students, see CASA’s full press release.

While these are good first steps, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure affordable and accessible education for everyone. Particularly, needs based-funding for graduate students is still lacking and we will be looking for extensions of existing programs to graduate studies or comparable programs specifically targeting graduate students moving forward.
