Student Service Centre remains open for course withdrawals with a “W” standing. Consult your courses in the Course Schedule for specific information.

February 2016 Degree Conferral Deadlines

Standard

Congregation ceremony will be in May, 2016.  Please advise students that Enrolment Services will not accept any late applications for graduation, and there will be no exceptions to January 22, 2016 deadline.

Students completing their program requirements after January 23, 2016 should wait and apply to have their degree granted in May 2016.   The application for the degree to be granted in May 2016 and the May 2016 congregation ceremony will open on January 23, 2016 on the Student Service Centre.

Friday, January 22, 2016

Last day for applications to be submitted to Enrolment Services by all graduate students expecting to have degrees granted in February.  Congregation ceremony will be in May. Application is made through the Student Service Centre.

Last day for final master’s theses and doctoral dissertations to be accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for February degree granting. Must be approved and accepted by 4:00 pm.

Last day for graduate programs to notify the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies that all requirements (including major papers) have been met for non-thesis master’s degrees for February degree granting.

Competition Announcements: CAGS Distinguished Dissertation Award and Governor General’s Gold Medal

CAGS / ProQuest-UMI Distinguished Dissertation Awards

The CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Awards recognize Canadian doctoral dissertations that make unusually significant and original contributions to their academic field. Awards are offered through this spring’s competition for dissertations completed and accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2015. The awards include a $1,500 prize, a Citation Certificate and travel expenses of up to $1,500 to attend the 2016 CAGS Annual Conference in Toronto, Ontario.

Each graduate program may nominate one dissertation for this award. Deadline for nominations to be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies: 4:00 p.m. Friday, 19 February 2016.

Governor General’s Gold Medal

A gold medal is awarded to the graduate student who has achieved the most outstanding academic record in the graduating class for the doctoral degree. A second gold medal is awarded to the graduate student who has achieved most outstanding academic record in the graduating class for the master’s degree with thesis. Students must have submitted the final copy of their thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2015. This is an opportunity to honour the best in the graduating class within the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, as there is only one award for approximately 1,000 master’s graduates and one award for more than 300 doctoral graduates. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General of Canada, along with a personalized certificate signed by the Governor General. There is no monetary award associated with the medals.

Please be aware of the deadline for the Governor General’s Gold Medal competition, which is open to nominations from all graduate programs at UBC via their Faculty Dean’s Office. Deadline for nominations to be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies: 4:00 p.m. Friday, 4 March 2016.
