{"id":3512,"date":"2017-05-16T10:20:25","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T17:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/?p=3512"},"modified":"2017-05-16T10:20:25","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T17:20:25","slug":"volunteer-25th-may-marine-connections-youth-outreach-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/post-3512","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer 25th May &#8211; Marine Connections Youth Outreach project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u>Volunteer for the Let&#8217;s Talk Science Marine Connections Project<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s Talk Science UBC, in conjunction with the Vancouver Aquarium and Sigal Balshine from McMaster, is running a one-day scientific outreach event for two Surrey secondary school classes from schools identified as having a high percentage of disadvantaged youth.<\/p>\n<p>This event is completely free for the participating schools and their students (otherwise they couldn&#8217;t afford it!).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Project Aims<\/em><\/strong>: to show these kids how fantastic science is. We want to demonstrate that science is much more than just sitting in a lab with a white coat and a pipette and that scientists are awesome people like you!!\u00a0\u00a0We want them to learn how valuable the natural environment around them is and why science is so important and relevant to understanding and conserving it!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Project Details<\/em><\/strong>: The high school students (60 in total) will be taken to an active scientific research site (Crescent Beach, White Rock), to do marine ecology activities.This beach is a spawning ground of the fish, plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus). At low tide nesting males are easily accessible for study and observation.<\/p>\n<p>These fun, interesting and engaging activities that will not only excite the students, but also teach them about evolution, ecology, conservation in BC and how real science research is conducted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Call for Volunteers<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are currently looking for volunteers to help out on the day. Knowledge of aquatic biology and ecology an asset but not necessary.\u00a0\u00a0Full training will be provided<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Who: <\/em><\/strong>Students (undergrads and graduates), post-docs and staff!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Date:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Thursday 25th May 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Time:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a010 am \u2013 3pm (Lunch will be supplied for volunteers.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Location:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Crescent Beach, White Rock. Carpooling will be available. All transport costs will be reimbursed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Training:\u00a0<\/strong>Friday 19th May 2-4pm at the Vancouver Aquarium<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Volunteer Role:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The high school students will be split up into groups of 5 and will rotate through ecology stations on the beach.
