FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are excited to offer FISH 507: Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership for the 2018\/19 academic year. Please find a description attached and feel free to email any questions to\u00a0<\/span>ocean.leaders@ubc.ca<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grand Challenges in Ocean Leadership helps students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to translate research into policy and management innovations. Students are mentored on a variety of professional development skills by faculty in UBC\u2019s Ocean Leaders program and off-campus collaborators.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Class exercises include scenario planning, science communication and knowledge translation, collective leadership, and strategies for working with stakeholders including governments, NGOs and the broader community<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the course, students work in interdisciplinary groups on local marine and coastal challenges with community partners. Recent projects included:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Making False Creek swimmable<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>UBC plastic use and its ocean impacts<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Managing shoreline waste<\/span><\/p>\n
