BioTAP Challenges and Rewards of Teaching Workshop<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

BioTAP is a TA training program that started in the Biology Program but is now open to all graduate students in life sciences. Free lunch is provided! Space is limited.\u00a0\u00a0this session the TAs will review their teaching experience from the fall term. The TA mentors will revisit the topics introduced at the TAO (time management in graduate student life, marking\/evaluating students, inclusivity (diversity in the classroom), classroom management (including time), TA-student\/TA-faculty relations) with the group.<\/span><\/p>\n

Science Fair Mentorship<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Are you interested in a longer-term, relationship-building program, possibly with older students? Then sign up for science fair mentorship! The science fair mentorship program increases student confidence with and understanding of the scientific method and scientific communication by pairing small groups of grade 8-10 students with Let’s Talk Science volunteer mentors. These mentors work with students through the entire process of designing, running, and analyzing a scientific experiment for a science fair project. The program consists of working with students in 7 mentoring sessions (3 digital in November and 4 at Britannia Secondary in January\/February) then judging projects and cheering on your mentees at the school science fair on February 7.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Science Outreach Opportunity with MEED\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The Modules in Ecology and Evolution Development program (MEED) with Let’s Talk Science is looking for graduate student and post-doc volunteers to present one-hour ecology and\/or evolution modules (lessons) related to their own research to K-12 students!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This program runs from October to March and brings together K-12 educators and researchers for science outreach to classrooms. You will be paired with one teacher from any grade level (K-12) you are comfortable with and together you will discuss the lesson that you wish to present to the students.\u00a0The total time commitment is\u00a0 approximately 10 to 20 hours over the school year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Interested? Please RSVP for the orientation on October 30th\u00a0from 4:00 – 6:00 PM by emailing\u00a0meed@ubclts.com<\/a>. Feel free to come to the orientation to learn more about the program before committing. Food provided! RSVPing helps us have adequate amounts of food. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teacher Partnership Program<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Let’s Talk Science Teacher Partnership Full Day Trips is the option of volunteering with a small group of volunteers and visiting several (typically ~3) classrooms per day. As with individual teacher partnerships, the expectation is that your group will make 3 separate visits to the school. We can reimburse you for mileage and lunch! You have the option of conducting all of these visits in May\/June after exams or during reading break. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The goal of this program is to improve our ability to bring science outreach to schools that have less access due to their location.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
