There are two awards: one for engineering, medical sciences and natural sciences; and one for fine arts, humanities and social sciences.\u00a0 Awards are offered through this spring\u2019s competition for dissertations completed and accepted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018. A second gold medal is awarded to the graduate student who has achieved most outstanding academic record as a Master\u2019s student completing a thesis.\u00a0 Students must have submitted the final copy of their thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies between January 1, 2018\u00a0and December 31, 2018.\u00a0 This is an opportunity to honour the best in the graduating class within the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, as there is only one award for more than 2,000 Master\u2019s graduates and one award for more than 500 doctoral graduates. Medals are presented on behalf of the Governor General of Canada by participating educational institutions, along with a personalized certificate signed by the Governor General. There is no monetary award associated with the medals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.45pt; vertical-align: baseline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.5pt; font-family: 'Lucida Sans Unicode',sans-serif; color: black;\">Please be aware of the deadline for the Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal competition, which is open to nominations from all graduate programs at UBC\u00a0via their Faculty Dean\u2019s Office. <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans Unicode',sans-serif;\">Graduate programs must check with their respective Dean\u2019s Office for their Faculty\u2019s internal nomination deadline<\/span><\/strong>.
