Our community recognizes the impacts of climate change and we have recently completed a climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategy. As part of our adaptation strategy we are working towards self-sufficiency in four main areas, food, energy, employment and finance. With respect to energy self-sufficiency our community has implemented a number of clean energy initiatives, including several solar power projects and a joint partnership with Innergex Inc. for a hydroelectric project. We are also investigating new wind, hydro and solar power projects to support an up and coming housing development. We are also implementing demand side management practices through a made in Kanaka program called &#8220;KanPower&#8221; and real-time energy monitors in community buildings to secure detailed power usage.<\/p>\n<p>We are keen to hire a student intern to help gather, store and transfer knowledge related to our community energy and adaptation practices. In general, this will include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Analyzing, summarizing and communicating data and information related to Kanaka\u2019s energy self-sufficiency projects.<br \/>\n\u2022 Analyzing, summarizing and communicating data and information related to Kanaka\u2019s environmental monitoring programs.<br \/>\n\u2022 Supporting community energy efficiency initiatives.<br \/>\n\u2022 Updating the community website with communication materials<\/p>\n<p>The intent is to complete the desired analysis and prepare communication materials to help build capacity among the membership to further advance Kanaka&#8217;s (energy) self-sufficiency goals and environmental monitoring initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start\/End Date<\/strong><br \/>\nThis position is for a duration of 13 weeks starting May 6th, 2019 and ending on August 2nd, 2019 with an option to extend the term for an additional 3 weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reporting Structure<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Community Energy\/Climate Technologist will report to Chief Patrick on a daily basis with engagement, guidance and mentoring from Urban Systems Ltd. and Riverside Energy Systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Duties and Responsibilities<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Assess the viability of renewable energy project opportunities including: solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass.<br \/>\n\u2022 Analysis of power generation data from existing energy projects and cost-benefit evaluation.<br \/>\n\u2022 Communication materials and presentation related to Kanaka&#8217;s energy self-sufficiency projects.<br \/>\n\u2022 Evaluating energy supply and efficiency options at Kanaka&#8217;s affordable housing project (in design phase).<br \/>\n\u2022 Support the implementation of KanPower and other energy efficiency initiatives.<br \/>\n\u2022 Communication materials and presentation to community on energy use analysis and recommendations.<br \/>\n\u2022 Prepare community energy and emissions baselines (data collection and analysis).<br \/>\n\u2022 Download, analysis and summary of weather data from Kanaka Bar\u2019s weather stations and hydrometric gauging stations.<br \/>\n\u2022 All data, reports and communication materials to be added to Kanaka Bar&#8217;s public website.<br \/>\nRequirements<br \/>\n\u2022 Must be enrolled in a fulltime undergraduate or graduate program and returning to university following their internship. Students who have completed their degree program are not eligible.<br \/>\n\u2022 Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Applicant must have the skills to generate works on their own using Microsoft Office package.<br \/>\n\u2022 Interest in climate change adaption and clean energy initiatives.<br \/>\n\u2022 Basic understanding of energy production and usage.<br \/>\nWorking Conditions<br \/>\n\u2022 Physical presence at the Band Office from Monday to Friday during regular office hours and during Council, Board and Community meetings.<br \/>\n\u2022 Field work in hot and cold conditions.<br \/>\n\u2022 Interaction with employees, membership and the public.<br \/>\n\u2022 Travel as and when required.<br \/>\n\u2022 Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.<br \/>\n\u2022 Sitting for extended periods of time.<br \/>\n\u2022 Able to attend community meetings and conduct presentations using various media.<\/p>\n<p>This will be a full-time contract employment position for a minimum of 13 weeks based out of Kanaka Bar\u2019s Band Office. Compensation will consider both the qualification and experience of the applicant. Accommodation in our new subdivision will be provided with rent and hydro covered by Kanaka Bar.
