{"id":8527,"date":"2022-07-21T12:18:52","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T19:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/?p=8527"},"modified":"2022-07-21T12:18:52","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T19:18:52","slug":"urgent-support-request-entrepreneurship-course-for-graduate-students-tech-entrepreneurship-apsc541-baen506","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/post-8527","title":{"rendered":"URGENT SUPPORT REQUEST: Entrepreneurship Course For Graduate Students: Tech Entrepreneurship (APSC541\/BAEN506)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings all:<\/p>\n<p>Annually, we reach out with the goal of promoting a truly practical, experiential and real-world course focused on technology entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech Entrepreneurship (APSC541\/BAEN506)<\/strong>\u00a0has been running for over 25 years and has facilitated many entrepreneurial ventures and realized numerous successful breakout companies such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwavesys.com\/home\">DWave<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zymeworks.com\/\">Zymeworks<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrelwise.ca\/\">Barrelwise<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/staff-blogs\/vancouvers-recon-instruments-acquired-by-intel\">Recon Instruments<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; just to name a few. \u00a0 This course pairs graduate business and APSC\/STEM students to provide an experience-based introduction into the lean start-up\u00a0process. It is a real-life simulation of the process that founders go through when starting a high-tech company. Students will be faced with the key issues involved in evaluating market opportunities, building a\u00a0prototype, designing profitable business models, producing a solid business plan, raising capital, addressing legal considerations and developing a winning team. Students will gain the skills and tools to creatively commercialize high-tech research into profitable businesses. Teams will be expected to develop credible pitches that will be made to industry professionals. \u00a0Some of these student companies go on to participate\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.entrepreneurship.ubc.ca\/\">e@UBC<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.entrepreneurship.ubc.ca\/hatch\">the Hatch<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativedestructionlab.com\/locations\/vancouver\/\">Creative Destruction Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The core of the course runs on Wednesday evenings from January-April 2023 (6-9:30pm); and there are 3 critical and mandatory preliminary classes that take place in late November\/early December dedicated to team formation (Nov 16<sup>th<\/sup>, 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, and 30<sup>th<\/sup> at 6-9pm).\u00a0 The course is taught by a team of business and STEM\/APSC instructors for a well-rounded business and technical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The course has an\u00a0application process for admission as it is very competitive with an early admission application deadline of September 15<sup>th<\/sup> and a final application deadline of November 6<sup>th<\/sup> .
