{"id":9502,"date":"2023-05-10T09:30:01","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T16:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/?p=9502"},"modified":"2023-05-10T09:30:01","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T16:30:01","slug":"post-doctoral-fellow-in-sustainable-agriculture-and-food-systems-safs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lfsgrads\/post-9502","title":{"rendered":"Post-doctoral Fellow in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS)."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Post-doctoral Fellow in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAFS).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Environment, Agriculture and Geography at Bishop\u2019s University in Sherbrooke,\u00a0Quebec, Canada, seeks to appoint a highly qualified candidate with a strong interest in sustainable food\u00a0systems for a full-time, 2-year funded post-doctoral fellow position in Sustainable Agriculture and Food\u00a0Systems (SAFS). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for external funding\u00a0agencies if they wish to continue their research at Bishop&#8217;s in subsequent years.<\/p>\n<p>The SAFS Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake a program of original research under the supervision of Dr.\u00a0Vivian Valencia (Research Chair in Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Action) and Dr. Darren Bardati\u00a0(Director of SAFS) and in collaboration with the SAFS faculty team (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubishops.ca\/safs\">www.ubishops.ca\/safs<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The successful candidate will join an ongoing research program to investigate how to foster a\u00a0transformation towards more sustainable food systems. This program focuses on the study of\u00a0\u2018lighthouse\u2019 farms, that is, extraordinary farms and farming systems that operate in ways that reduce\u00a0ecological footprint, improve biodiversity conservation, increase the use of ecological processes for crop\u00a0production, and integrate gender equity and social justice. The postdoc will conduct interdisciplinary\u00a0research to answer research questions such as what are the conditions (e.g., environmental,\u00a0institutional, and socio-economic) under which \u2018lighthouse\u2019 farms and farming systems develop, and\u00a0how can we use lighthouse farms as the basis to co-design transformation pathways with diverse\u00a0stakeholders to examine alternative agrifood system futures that are radically progressive yet proven to\u00a0be attainable. This research may be conducted with farmers in Quebec and\/or Latin America,\u00a0particularly, in Mexico, Colombia, Cuba or Brazil. The candidate should specify in their research proposal\u00a0if they have a preference for either of the aforementioned research locations, and experience working\u00a0there.<\/p>\n<p>Key responsibilities:<\/p>\n<p>Under the supervision of Drs. Valencia and Bardati, the selected candidate will be responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research conceptualization<\/li>\n<li>collection of quantitative and qualitative data (e.g., surveys, farm assessments, interviews, workshops),<\/li>\n<li>Data analysis<\/li>\n<li>Report writing in English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Publication in peer-reviewed journals and other non-scientific outlets (e.g., blogs, newspaper articles)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Required:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PhD in relevant natural or social sciences fields such as agroecology, agricultural sciences, rural sociology, geography, environmental resource management, or related fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience in interdisciplinary work<\/li>\n<li>A proven track record demonstrating research skills<\/li>\n<li>Experience in conducting field work with farm and\/or food system actors<\/li>\n<li>Experience in collecting and analyzing social and\/or environmental data<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work independently and as part of a team<\/li>\n<li>Strong scientific writing and communication skills and a track record of academic publications<\/li>\n<li>Interest to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary research team<\/li>\n<li>Ability to travel<\/li>\n<li>English language proficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recommended:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience in transdisciplinary work<\/li>\n<li>Experience in statistics<\/li>\n<li>Working French communication skills if field work is conducted in Quebec<\/li>\n<li>Working Spanish or Portuguese communication skills if field work is conducted in Latin America<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This position will be based at the Department of Environment, Agriculture, and Geography at Bishop\u2019s\u00a0University, located in Quebec\u2019s Eastern Townships. The region is renowned for its agro-tourism, organic\u00a0and community-supported food production, and a growing culture of entrepreneurship within the\u00a0context of sustainable agriculture. Bishop\u2019s 500-acre campus includes a new 140-acre Educational\u00a0 Farm (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubishops.ca\/farm\">www.ubishops.ca\/farm<\/a>), which is currently under development. The farm will be a showpiece of\u00a0sustainable agriculture design, and serve as the setting for the SAFS programs\u2019 practical teaching and\u00a0research projects.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop\u2019s University observes an equal access employment in public bodies for women, visible minorities,\u00a0ethnic minorities, Indigenous and disabled people (including the possibility of accommodation during\u00a0the selection process).
