You should apply for a SIN if you plan to work in Canada.\u00a0Be sure you understand the eligibility requirements to work\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/career\/resources\/work-permits\/on-campus-work\">on campus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/career\/resources\/work-permits\/off-campus-work\">off campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I get it?<br \/>\n<\/strong>You can apply for a SIN in person at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.servicecanada.gc.ca\/cgi-bin\/sc-srch.cgi?ln=eng\">Service Canada Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic students<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bring your original birth certificate or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.servicecanada.gc.ca\/eng\/sin\/apply\/proof.shtml\">other primary document<\/a>\u00a0to Service Canada when you apply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International students<br \/>\n<\/strong>Over the past ten months, there have been multiple changes to the SIN application process for international students \u2013 an indirect result of changes to immigration legislation effective June 1, 2014. The way temporary residents (such as international students) obtain a SIN has now changed. Students who expect to accept employment should plan ahead as it may take\u00a01-2 months\u00a0to obtain the proper documents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Letters written by employers are no longer needed<\/strong>. To obtain a SIN, international students now need to take one of the following in person to a Service Canada office:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a study permit that states the student \u201cmay accept employment\u201d or \u201cmay work\u201d in Canada, <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>a work permit (e.g. co-op, post-graduation, or spouse\/partner work permit), <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>a study permit <strong>AND<\/strong> a \u201cconfirmation to work off campus\u201d letter issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) prior to February 6, 2015 (CIC no longer issues such letters)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students who are eligible to work (<a href=\"http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/career\/resources\/working-canada\">http:\/\/students.ubc.ca\/career\/resources\/working-canada<\/a>) but do not have a study permit with the phrase \u201cmay accept employment\u201d or \u201cmay work\u201d need to get a corrected study permit from CIC before applying for a SIN. Depending on their situation, these students need to either <em>amend<\/em> or <em>change<\/em> the conditions of their study permit. Details are on our website below. Processing times vary over time but generally take 1-2 months.
