The hidden job market includes all positions that have not yet been communicated\u00a0through visible channels, such as newspapers. These positions are filled by–or created\u00a0for–candidates who come to the employer’s attention through employee\u00a0recommendations, referrals from trusted associates, recruiters, or direct contact from the\u00a0candidate.<\/p>\n

Successful job seekers who tap into the hidden job market are able to connect with the\u00a0employer’s network. Networking–using your contacts to connect with the employer’s
\ncontact–is the key to tapping into the hidden job market.<\/p>\n

Developing your network<\/h3>\n

By beginning with a few people and building a base of contacts, you can work to develop\u00a0and expand your list of contacts. Start by talking to friends or close business associates,\u00a0generally people with whom you feel comfortable. Don’t worry if they are not employed in\u00a0the field in which you are interested; they may know someone who is, or at least\u00a0someone who can connect you with the right person. Let them know that you are looking\u00a0for a job, what type of job you are looking for and your skills. State that you would
\nwelcome advice, suggestions and ideas.<\/p>\n

Expanding your network<\/h3>\n

Once you have talked to people close to you, you will become more confident and better
\nprepared, and be ready to contact people you know less well.<\/p>\n
