I recently came upon a very powerful and beautiful commercial by Dove called Real Beauty. Watching the ad, I felt very emotional as it was more personal and targeted one’s emotions and feelings at a deeper level then just marketing a product. This is definitely one of my favourite advertisements of the year, and it sends out an extremely powerful message conveyed in a beautiful and creative way.
It is a campaign that proves to show that women look down upon themselves and see themselves as less attractive than how strangers perceive them. In the video, women of all ages and different backgrounds were sat down behind a curtain and were told to describe their facial appearance using descriptive words. An FBI forensic sketch artist sat behind the curtain and sketched their facial features based on the description the women gave him. Later, strangers who had spent time with these women were brought into the room and were asked to describe these women in their point of view, and again, the sketch artist, drew live sketches based on the verbal comments. The two sketches were then compared for each women, and the contrast was quite dramatic! The sketches were more attractive when strangers described the women compared to when the women described themselves.
The tagline of this campaign is “You’re more beautiful than you think” which is a powerful message that affects many women who down-size themselves. It is a current issue and its warming to see that the message has been publicized using a beautiful and creative way while educating women on this topic. Online conversations brought a lot of attention to the video itself and even#Wearebeautiful started trending on twitter.
I would encourage anyone to watch this video campaign- it is definitely something different than your usual product-selling marketing video!
