{"id":19,"date":"2012-01-10T10:26:10","date_gmt":"2012-01-10T17:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/libr5282011w2\/?p=19"},"modified":"2012-01-10T10:26:37","modified_gmt":"2012-01-10T17:26:37","slug":"ya-dystopias-and-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/libr5282011w2\/?p=19","title":{"rendered":"YA dystopias and politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just spotted a couple of articles about the political modelling going on in YA dystopias: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2012\/01\/08\/what_occupy_can_learn_from_the_hunger_games\/\" title=\"What Occupy can learn from the Hunger Games on Salon\" target=\"_blank\">What Occupy can Learn from the Hunger Games<\/a> and a comment on that article that asks <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/alyssa\/2012\/01\/10\/400179\/are-ya-dystopias-secretly-conservative\/\" title=\"Are YA dystopias secretly conservative? on ThinkProgress\" target=\"_blank\">Are YA dystopias secretly conservative?<\/a> Reading them in that order is probably your better bet.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like there&#8217;s some connection there in wondering about the ramifications of political messages for these impressionable readers, and discounting their agency. Rosenberg says the message of opting out is &#8220;worrying, given the age of the target audience&#8221; which isn&#8217;t a full on &#8220;These kids today&#8217;ll believe anything,&#8221; but I was sensitive to it after this week&#8217;s readings. <\/p>\n<p>Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionsofawolf.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/10\/book-review-z-for-zachariah-by-robert-c-obrien-bottom-of-tbr-pile-challenge\/\" title=\"Z for Zachariah review on Opinions of a Wolf\" target=\"_blank\">this review of Z for Zachariah<\/a> had a bit calling a character&#8217;s decision &#8220;very pacifistic, almost dangerously so&#8221; which struck me as interesting for its use of non-politically correct ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, what do you think?
