Hello, my name is Avril Li. I am in second year geographical major in the Faculty of Science at the University of British Columbia. I am currently playing on the varsity women’s golf team at UBC, and I have been golfing for 11 years. I was born in HangZhou, China, and moved to Port Moody, British Columbia when I was 12 years old. I speak Chinese and English.
When I was looking at the different majors to choose from, I gravitated most towards geographical sciences because the course descriptions intrigued me the most. I am extremely interested in environment and sustainability thus I think my major suits my curiosity in that aspect. I also think the courses in my major have many practical applications to the real world. For example in geob 204, which it biometeorology, I learn about different ways to increase crop yield etc. In geob 270, which is a geographical information course, I also learn about the usage of GIS software, which can have many practical usages in the future.
Because I am committed on a varsity sports team, balancing both golf and school requires good time management skills as well as dedication. Since I am busy all the time, I always get my work done as efficient as I can. My dream is to become a doctor in the future and great time management skills and the ability to work efficiently will help me exceed academically.
