I didn’t do this week’s potato printing task, but wanted to share a similar thing I did back in Grade 9 or 10 art.
This is a stamp made from linoblock and what the stamp ended up looking like. The text is the Chinese character for my last name.
I think I used watercolour for the paint and it wasn’t a good idea. You can see this with the bleed. The linoblock also softens with use so it doesn’t look as crisp with subsequent stamping.
Process for creating this print
Materials: Pencil, paper, linoblock, carving tool
- I got my dad to write the character using pencil on paper.
- I wrote over his character to make it very very dark.
- I placed the paper face down onto my linoblock and rubbed it down. This is to transfer the graphite from the paper onto the linoblock.
- Step 3 makes a correctly reversed print.
- Carve AROUND the character. If you want a reverse print, you’ll have to carve THE CHARACTER.
Thank you for sharing this, Linda. It is truly a work of art. You are quite skilled in carving.
I remember doing something very similar in high school and used my stamp to decorate an old purse. Thanks for sharing!
