Printmaking – A Stamp from the Past

I didn’t do this week’s potato printing task, but wanted to share a similar thing I did back in Grade 9 or 10 art.

This is a stamp made from linoblock and what the stamp ended up looking like. The text is the Chinese character for my last name.

Linoblock stamp with the Chinese character "Yang" and its resulting print

I think I used watercolour for the paint and it wasn’t a good idea. You can see this with the bleed. The linoblock also softens with use so it doesn’t look as crisp with subsequent stamping.

Process for creating this print

Materials: Pencil, paper, linoblock, carving tool

  1. I got my dad to write the character using pencil on paper.
  2. I wrote over his character to make it very very dark.
  3. I placed the paper face down onto my linoblock and rubbed it down. This is to transfer the graphite from the paper onto the linoblock.
  4. Step 3 makes a correctly reversed print.
  5. Carve AROUND the character. If you want a reverse print, you’ll have to carve THE CHARACTER.

I remember doing something very similar in high school and used my stamp to decorate an old purse. Thanks for sharing!
