Bolthouse Carrot Sticks

Role in Oil: This one is tricky. I originally thought that eating carrots was fossil fuel friendly that was until I further anaylzed the product. These tiny, perfectly bite sized, peeled carrots dont just get pulled out of the ground looking this edible.  The carrots are cut and peeled and possibly died to look this perfect. All of these steps require the use of energy and fossil fuels.

As discussed by Manning (2004), most gardens and crops use fertilizers which inturn use oil.

Delivery: The carrots and all other bolthouse products are delivered via semi truck from California to British Columbia.

Vancouver BC to Westmoreland California – 3870km. aprox.

Packaging: The carrots are packaged in a plastic bag and transported to stores in cardboard boxes. The Bolthouse website says that their bottles can be recycled but I do not believe that their plastic bags can be.
