Starbucks Island Oat Bar and Starbucks Coffee

Role in Oil:Usually, the beans are picked by hand, however, if the land is relatively flat, machines may be used.  The coffee cherries are sorted into bad or unripe via conveyer belt and then the bean is washed to remove strands of pulp, 130 liters of fresh water is required to process one kilogram of quality coffee. After the coffee is dried the beans undergo milling, polishing and grading, all of which require oil (Wikipedia, 2011).

Delivery:Whether it be from Latin America, Africa or Asia, the coffee bean has a lot of travelling to do before it reaches your cup. It may be used by vessel and then delivery truck to a Starbucks factory and then by Semi Truck to your local Starbucks store.

Packaging:Starbucks packaging can be tricky at times. I would love to say that I bring my personal mug in with me when I go, but there are several occasions in which I opt for the ever trendy Starbucks cup. Currently the cup is 10%  post consumer recycled fiber.

Starbucks claims that by 2015 they will have recycling available in all of their stores and serve 25% of beverages in reusable cups (Starbucks,2011). One point that web page didn’t touch on is their baked goods. First, the bake goods are individually packaged in some kind of plastic wrapping, then when distributed to the costumer, the baked goods are slipped into a brown paper bag. I can imagine that the baked goods are shipped via cardboard box to the stores.
