Here is the new plan, which we will be implementing as we can this year (2016W) and will be fully implementing next year (2017W).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(Remember those <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/linggrads\/2016\/09\/03\/new-courses-for-2017w\/\">new courses<\/a> that are on the horizon? Be thinking about those, as you process this information.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Breadth requirement.<\/strong>\u00a0Complete at least 3 courses from the following list for a total of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">9 credits<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 508 (Phonetics)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 510 (Phonology)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 520 (Syntax)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 525 (Semantics)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Depth requirement.<\/strong>\u00a0Complete at least 5 courses from the following list, including at least 1 section of\u00a0LING 530 for a total of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">15 credits<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 5XX (Acquisition)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 532 (Field Methods in Linguistics II)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 505A (Morphology)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 5XX (Phonetics)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 5XX (Phonology)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 5XX (Semantics)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 5XX (Syntax)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">LING 530 (Seminars on assorted topics)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Methods requirement.<\/strong>\u00a0You&#8217;ll need \u00a0a total of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">9 credits<\/span> of methods courses\u00a0to complete this requirement. You must complete LING 531 (Field Methods) and at least 3 credits of Linguistics methods\u00a0courses<span class=\"s1\">*. \u00a0For the remaining credits you could take an additional field methods course (LING 532) or an appropriate course in a different department (statistics, logic, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Important note!\u00a0<\/strong>We used to require\u00a0that a Ph.D. student had to be registered in a LING\u00a0530 seminar until they were ABD. Now they just must be registered in any course other than a thesis credit course. Easy peasy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">*These new methods courses do not exist at all yet!
