A new window will pop up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part2.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cLoad waveform\u201d on the lefthand side of the box. Browse to the first audio file you want.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cAnalyze\u201d. A new window will pop up. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part3.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cF0\/F0 structure extraction\u201d. A new window will pop up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part4.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click  \u201cCalculate\u201d. Wait until the image of a pitch track appears.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part5.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cAuto tracking\u201d. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part6.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At the bottom part of this window, there should be a waveform with green boxes. These green boxes need to be aligned with the voiced segments (vowels and voiced consonants) in the waveform. To zoom in, left click on the x-axis. To zoom out, hold shift and left click on the x-axis. Move the green boxes by dragging the edges until they are aligned with the voiced parts. Also make sure there are no extra green boxes. You can get rid of them by dragging the borders together. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part7.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cFinish\/Upload\u201d.  This will close the window with the pitch track and waveform.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part8.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cAperiodicity extraction\u201d in the window where you clicked \u201cF0\/F0 structure extraction\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSTRAIGHT spectrum\u201d in that same window. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part9.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSave STRAIGHT object\u201d. Browse to where you want to save it. I suggest a folder called \u201cmatsynth\u201d. Give it a name and save.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Hit \u201cFinish\/Upload\u201d. This will close this window. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part10.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cLoad waveform\u201d on the righthand side of the original MorphingMenu window. Browse to the second audio file you want to use. Then repeat steps 4 to 13 with that file.  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE 1: If you already have the synthesized file and need to go back to it later, you can do so using \u201cImport\u201d instead of \u201cLoad waveform\u201d in the MorphingMenu window. <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Hit \u201cPlay\u201d on either of the two sides to refresh the window. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cOpen anchoring interface\u201d. This will open a new window.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part11.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cCalculate distance matrix\u201d. Wait until the image appears on the right.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part12.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use the small square at the top to zoom in and out (zoom in by left clicking, zoom out by holding shift and left clicking). <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part13.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Add new markers to the line in the larger box on the right by clicking the line. (Remove them by shift + click). You want one marker for the beginning and end of each sound. Use the spectrograms at the left to align the markers, and use F2\/F3 as markers for where vowels start and end. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSave morphing substrate\u201d. Browse to where you want to save it. I suggest a folder called \u201cmatsubstrate\u201d. Give it a name and save it. Then close the distance matrix window. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>In the original MorphingMenu window, click \u201cLoad morphing substrate\u201d. Browse to the file you just saved and load it. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part14.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cInitialize morphing rate\u201d. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cEdit morphing rate\u201d. A new box will come up. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part15.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the first of the boxes with lines, move the line all the way down to A. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part16.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click \u201cSet up morphing rate\u201d.  This will take you back to the MorphingMenu window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part17.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSave morphing substrate\u201d. Navigate to where you saved the previous substrate, and save this with the same name but with A at the end (e.g. sabash_shabashA). <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cEdit morphing rate\u201d again. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>This time, move the line all the way up to B. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part18.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSet up morphing rate\u201d again.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cSave morphing substrate\u201d. Again, navigate to where you saved the previous substrate, and save this one with a B at the end (e.g. sabash_shabashB). <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Quit the MorphingMenu. You can now repeat these steps for as many continua as you need to make. Do these steps for all the continua you\u2019re making before continuing to Step 32. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>From Matlab, open morph.continua.m (in document\/matlab).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lingresources\/files\/2016\/01\/straight_part19.png\" alt=\"alt text\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>In the first few lines of the script that opens, set the path to<br \/>\nwhere you saved the substrates and the outpath to where you want the<br \/>\ncontinua to appear. Also set the number of steps you want.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Click \u201cRun\u201d. Once it finishes running, all the continua should be<br \/>\nin the folder you specified as the outpath.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE: If you get an error message when you run the morph continua script,<br \/>\nit usually works to go back to the stage where you create the substrate.<br \/>\nImport the two matsynth files as specified in Note 1, then follow the<br \/>\nremaining steps to redo the alignment and the substrates.
