Education Technology 540

“The Rise of AI”

For Education Technology 540: Text Technologies: The Changing Spaces of Reading and Writing we were assigned a multimedia project, using the format of our choice. We had to respond to an idea introduced in the course. My choice was to focus on Artificial Intelligence. I have chosen this artefact for a number of reasons. First, for this project I used an application called GoAnimate to create my multimedia project. This was a medium I had used for several of other courses, but not for anything as significant as this project. I wanted to combine the skills I had gained from the many smaller projects and create a significant work to demonstrate my expertise with this tool. I also wanted to highlight this project because I really enjoyed putting it together. My research into AI has snowballed into a spiral of inquiry. Machine learning has become a strong interest for me and I have furthered my research in this area since this project. Not only does this project display my expertise with the medium, but it influenced my thinking a great deal.

“First Nation’s Pictographs”

For Education Technology 540 we were asked to create a documentary about a pre computer technology. For several years I had taught First Nation’s Studies 12 and I have a keen interest in the various cultures local to where I live. I knew that there were several examples of pictographs within an hour of my doorstep, so I wanted to use this opportunity to do some exploring and some research on the local pictographs.  I chose this artefact as it represents the culmination of my expertise with digital tools. This was the most significant media production I have ever created and it turned out as my teacher said “remarkable”.  I worked with still images, maps, topographical maps, text, audio, and video in Camtasia to create an almost 11 minute documentary. I learned that my ability to tell stories using multimedia is powerful! The skills that I honed during the creation of my documentary are something that I use frequently in my practice. Being able to create professional quality videos for my classes really helps to keep my students engaged.

Education Technology 531

“Call of Duty: how hyper violent video games impact our reality and ideology”

For Education Technology 531: Cultural and New Media Studies we were challenged to create a Media Study Guide to introduce the key concepts of media literacy. We were asked to create pages for a collaborative textbook created by the class. I have chosen this artefact for two reasons, one it was very challenging for me, as I had never worked with Microsoft Publisher to this extent before, so my learning curve was steep. Two, it turned out very good. I was very happy with the activities that came out of this project. Some ideas were adapted from things I had tried before. I was able to spend some time looking at some activities and apply new theories and principles I had learned about in previous classes. My pedagogical toolbox became more adept with the inclusion of an expertise using Publisher. Since creating this MSG I was able to use the skills I developed to create visual schedules for my students, and create posters for events or activities I am hosting in the school.
