{"id":70,"date":"2013-09-09T00:46:27","date_gmt":"2013-09-09T07:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled360\/?p=70"},"modified":"2013-09-09T00:46:27","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T07:46:27","slug":"chapter-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled360\/2013\/09\/09\/chapter-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an English Learner myself, I never realized the kind of background learning that needed to take place in order for me to succeed.\u00a0 I understand the importance of parents in the child&#8217;s ability to grasp and comprehend the &#8220;academic language&#8221;.\u00a0 I always felt that there were different kinds of &#8220;Englishes&#8221; and wondered why the &#8220;academic English&#8221; was not really &#8220;taught&#8221; in school.\u00a0 Watching a lot of television and reading certainly helped me to learn English.
