Mise-en-Scene: Jackie

Title: Jackie

Year: 2016

Director: Pablo Larrain

Synopsis: In the week following the death of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, Jackie is determined to craft a legacy for JFK’s life and presidency. The film follows jJackie through their early days in the White House, the notorious assassination and the transition to the Johnson presidency.

Rationale: This was a clear choice for me, given my affinity for biopics and all things Kennedy, but what struck me about the scene I will present is how I overlooked an obvious experience Jackie would have had following her husband’s murder. It is the scene in the film that gave/gives me chills.

Mise-En-Scene of Psycho

  • Film: Psycho
  • Year: 1960
  • Director: Alfred Hitchcock
  • Characters include: Marion Crane is a real estate secretary who decides to steal from the company in order to help her lover, Sam Loomis, from his debts. She decides to stop at the Bates Motel and this is where she meets Norman Bates. She agrees to have dinner with Bates in the parlour and decides to drive back to Arizona to return the money in the morning. While is the shower, Crane is murdered and it’s up to Lila Crane  and Loomis to try to solve the mystery of Lila’s missing sister.
  • Reason: I chose this film because the shower scene is one of the most iconic scenes not only in the horror genre, but also in all cinematography. Hitchcock uses many cinematic elements that add to the impact and popularity of the film.

Neutral Scene Short Films

Hello everyone,

Thank you once again for creating such wonderful films in such a short period of time!

Since UBC blogs has a severe limitation on the size of files I can upload, I am sharing the videos via Google Docs: here. Please let me know if there are any issues with the links/videos. Apologies to the group that experienced the unexpected iPad tech issues, and further apologies as I could not show the video in class. It is uploaded onto the Google file.

While you and your group members can discuss sharing the videos on social media platforms, please ensure everyone in the group is comfortable with this decision. And also, please avoid sharing other group video(s).

All the best during your two-week practicum!

Everything Is a Remix

While doing the reading for Monday’s class, I was reminded of this short film that follows the trends of adaptations and remixes through film and media. For someone like me who is not well-versed in pop culture, it was both interesting and educational. Take a look if you’ve got 40 minutes to spare and are tired of doing schoolwork 🙂

Mise en Scene | Steven Universe | It’s Over, Isn’t It?

“Mr. Greg” is the 8th episode of the third season of Steven Universe and the 86th episode overall. 2016

Director

Ki-Yong Bae & Nick DeMayo (animation)

Jasmin Lai (art)

Joe Johnston (supervising)

Steven Universe is about 3 gem aliens Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl, and a half human, half gem alien boy named Steven. Together, as the “Crystal Gems” they protect their home city, and by extension, the planet Earth from extraterrestrial threats.

Steven’s mother died giving birth to him which causes friction between Pearl, and Steven’s father Greg; the former blames him for her death. Steven invited the two of them together on a road trip so that they could potentially bond and grieve over Rose’s death. This song is Pearl’s lament and realization that Greg won Rose’s heart and her struggle to accept it and move on.

I chose this scene because I really like the show, and this song was stuck in my head while I was in the shower this morning.

Articles of Interest

Hello everyone!

Just posting two articles of interest. One is on the Value of Listening. It provides some discussion about how students really do not listen to each other, and to consider some strategies to implement in your classroom. Further to this article, is to consider (as we noted many times) how performance activities or presentations can also help students become better listeners.

The second article talks about the potential value of having students memorize and present/perform a poem. How students remember the poem, the process, etc. While we have discussed the anxieties students may encounter when asked to memorize text, to consider what are the potential merits/challenges, and how might we ease students into this process?

Cheers,
Claire
