Assignment 2 – Brendan Ha

Brendan Ha – Assignment 2

Proxy Poem:

I’ve enjoyed ramen:
I’ve enjoyed ramyun since I was a kid, navigating islands
of shiitake with metal paddles.

My palate has enjoyed both.

I torqued around spring onions when the tongue was sensitive.
I wandered on fiery seas and visited napa islands.
I docked by chashu when the tides were mild.
I ignored the notes of cartographers when I sailed from
one rock to the next, and I’ve felt the warmth
of our people’s heart stir with younger colours.

I’ve enjoyed ramen:
Spicy, mild ramyun.

My palate has enjoyed both.

Wicked Piven of the West

Alongside the hugest wax figure of Christy Clark,
the bucketheaded witch of Westeros,
Stinky, green, and bloated,
Like an old sandwich
But still, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The wool was warm.
Shockingly, it melted into primordial
ooze, like a sloppy, melting Jeremy Piven,
In the belfry in the church at midnight mass,
“What the hell!” they screamed
And that guy was the hostest with the mostest.

Ha Assignment 1 – These Quiet Ajummas

These Quiet Ajummas

conversation
was best waged
over
bromine bubbles
and water jets
that struck the loose skin
of those loud ajummas

those forward leaning ajummas
draped hot chiton
on distant children
shouting academic strengths
as if
they understood
the inner guts of a school system
they had never grown up
in
reciting hyperbolic heroics
for the esteemed canon
of a recreation centre’s
hot tub

but these quiet ajummas
who sat back
against the walls
toes tracing shy circles
in the sediment deep below
would hear delivered stories
of their own kin
and wonder
how shallow
their knowledge
was of their own children
before retreating
water dripping
from loosened joints
to wash away
the chemicals of a hot tub
conversation in the nearby shower

Roll your hardened polymer clay against your cheek.

Soften it. Heat it. Dash it against ridges and lumps.

Flick it against the back of your teeth.

Then speak. Speak proud and clear in your broken alphabet.
