{"id":292,"date":"2017-07-31T12:03:28","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T19:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled445\/?p=292"},"modified":"2017-08-01T11:32:37","modified_gmt":"2017-08-01T18:32:37","slug":"minosky-assignment-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled445\/2017\/07\/31\/minosky-assignment-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Minosky Assignment 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-292-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled445\/files\/2017\/07\/Minosky.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled445\/files\/2017\/07\/Minosky.mp3\">https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/lled445\/files\/2017\/07\/Minosky.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><strong>Community Center<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Angelo\u2019s yellow jacket lies neatly folded<\/p>\n<p>In the worn, wooden cubby<\/p>\n<p>A single banana lies resting on top<\/p>\n<p>A familiar sight for 15 years<\/p>\n<p>Same jacket, different banana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My places have steadily been demolished<\/p>\n<p>These last 15 years<\/p>\n<p>Victims to economy and bulldozers<\/p>\n<p>Washed away by my own personal tsunami<\/p>\n<p>Homes, schools<\/p>\n<p>People<\/p>\n<p>Everything is different<\/p>\n<p>Except the welcoming arms of the automatic doors<\/p>\n<p>As I enter my community centre<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I stuff my bag into the neighbouring cubby<\/p>\n<p>And smile at the familiar jacket<\/p>\n<p>I tug my muggy gloves on and give them a sniff, wince<\/p>\n<p>I become part of the collective musk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I enter the labyrinth<\/p>\n<p>My metal, blue vinyl-pewed church<\/p>\n<p>And become numbed by the thump, thump, thump of<\/p>\n<p>Trodding on the treadmill<\/p>\n<p>Running rapidly to nowhere<\/p>\n<p>Rebooting my frantic mind with movement and music<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I trundle around,<\/p>\n<p>Engaging in the rhythmic movement<\/p>\n<p>Pushing and pulling and lifting<\/p>\n<p>Creating microscopic tears in my muscles<\/p>\n<p>Preparing my body to repair<\/p>\n<p>Preparing for the real weights<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Friends approach and smile<\/p>\n<p>Many with the measured steps of deceptively delicate insects<\/p>\n<p>As they make their way around the labyrinth<\/p>\n<p>Supported by walkers, chairs, canes,<\/p>\n<p>Human hands<\/p>\n<p>Waging wars<\/p>\n<p>Collectively delusional in our quest to gain control<\/p>\n<p>Over body, mind and time<\/p>\n<p>We walk the wheel<\/p>\n<p>In our suburban sanctuary of incremental miracles<\/p>\n<p>Nobody leaps out of their chairs or tosses their crutches<\/p>\n<p>Yelling hallelujah<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I lie on the blue plastic mat<\/p>\n<p>Contemplate the fluorescent lights, suspended and swaying ever so slightly<\/p>\n<p>Watch the silent ballet around me<\/p>\n<p>Slightly out of synch with the soft intonations of Joni Mitchell in my ears<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I gather my bag from my cubby<\/p>\n<p>I notice that the yellow jacket and banana are gone<\/p>\n<p>I emerge from my<\/p>\n<p>Community chrysalis<\/p>\n<p>Hobbling but hopeful,<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that I will be back<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Community Center Angelo\u2019s yellow jacket lies neatly folded In the worn, wooden cubby A single banana lies resting on top A familiar sight for 15 years Same jacket, different banana &nbsp;
