Robert G. Picard wrote a blog on the challenges that the cable and satellite companies are facing. Cable and satellite companies are increasingly finding it difficult to get the growth in customers and revenue they would like unlike past decades ago. Obviously, nowadays, the Internet has taken away the monopolies in the market.

Overall, cable and satellites already overcame some growth difficulties in the past by switching its strategy. For example, offering a variety of new services and products to consumers allowing them to access programming at times it is not offered on their channels or systems. The strategy helps cable/satellite company growth by increasing the time consumers spent with them, creating new advertising opportunities, and new sales and subscription opportunities. However, with the external competitors enters the market (ex. Netflix), revenue has been taken away from the cable/satellite operators.
My opinion for the cable company is to expand their business is by building relationships with those external competitors. Cable companies can have those TV shows that can’t be found from the other resources (eg. Netflix). Daily News and domestic shows are good choices to be maintained on TV. Where gives more international movies and talking shows to the external competitors. Focus strategy is the one that Cable and Satellite Company should really think about to stick on working with.
