This blog is designed to showcase my experience in taking the technical writing course at UBC. English 301 is designed for students coming from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to learn about the principles of professional communication in both business and technical contexts. Technical communication is crucial and much needed in all professions, as it helps people interact with the technology in their daily lives and solve complex problems. It can range from writing proposals, applications, reports, memo, and much more. Just like learning anything, being able to write technically requires much time and practice to refine the skill. Since technical writing is governed by standard principles and styles, it is necessary to have multiple individual practices, group collaborations, and instructor consultations during the process. This course will help us carry these out through an online setting by working through a web folio, a formal report proposal, emails and memos, an application package, and a LinkedIn profile with many opportunities to edit and reflect. Through this course, I hope to learn how to set my tone when targeting my specific audiences, how to organize and format my writings, and the other details to remember in a technical write-up. I believe that technical communication will be very useful in anything I do in the future, whether it is for writing job applications and report proposals to a company, or sending emails to enlarge my network. Technical writing is an invaluable skill in every organization and is something employers pay attention to when they choose their employees. Like you all, I am new to this course and new in learning technical writing. I hope that we will all work together and learn to become a group of comfortable technical writers!
