What had been a cold, hopeless life was now an insulated and luxurious one. Stone was no longer his seat; instead it was the frame for his fire. The dog, once flea ridden and emaciated, lay by the fireside flea free and well fed. The “Times” spread in his lap no longer served as his mattress and he had learned to read the words in it. But when the fire died, when his dog dozed off, he felt awkward. He had long since given up any hope of rest in his bedroom, and so when the sky grew dark and he became tired he took his blanket out to the front porch, curled up beneath the moon and fell asleep.
