I also experimented with persona, using my father as a stand-in for the first part of the poem and then shaking him off in the second part, when I begin to speak as myself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Women I\u2019ve Loved<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how dad hated mother\u2019s shouts, gin blossomed, passed out on the couch<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she loved alcohol almost as much as Murray<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the angel dust was Zoe, she\u2019s the sun that hurt the eyes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which he\u2019d try to avoid but somehow always see<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellisia after and before, she\u2019s the closing hospital door<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there were nails in his eyes when I stood to watch her go<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019til she came back again, just to be his lonely friend<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(then wrecked her car and died in the winter snow)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or red-faced Maddie, mad from drink, when she tried to claw him blind,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still, he\u2019ll miss her, as virginal with her, she was nothing if not kind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soon after Maddie another more like his mother, painted pictures that went with his words<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one canvas still hangs in the halls where they learned, of a croc with an innocent bird.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she haunts him too, though not like you, mother of God who he will not name<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thank heavens his own mom came back from the grave, erasing you with a healthy Jane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No more am I that mirror of a man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Catherine, her, Emma, and more, my life has started new\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and each night I dream a little bit less<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the mess I made of you.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post-excerpt\">What follows is a list poem where the list is implied instead of stated outright.
