Snacks and Drinks

Milk – A common drink which I consume everyday is milk. My family purchases Island Farms 1% Milk. The Milk from this company comes from dairy farms all throughout BC. Much of the natural production comes from cows and thus not a whole lot of fuels are used for this process. Some technology is used on the farms to increase productivity but because the product is local and natural, few fossil fuels are used. Take a look at a local family in surrey which owns a dairy farm. The overall processing and packaging of BC Island Farms Milk consists of a usual factory based facility which packages the Milk into plastic jugs or paper cartons. The advantage of having local facilities is that transportation costs are low which reduces the emissions and fuels used in the process.

Grapes – A snack I eat a few times per week is a serving of grapes. The grapes we purchase at our grocery store come from California. This state produces 90% of the grapes used for fresh fruit and wine in North America. Approximately only 21% of world grape production is used as fresh fruit. This is a small number but the demand is extremely high for areas which cant produce the fruit all year round such as Vancouver. The fresh Grapes are hand picked and packaged in a local facility and then are shipped via Air to our city where it can be sold. The exporting of product from other countries always adds up the dollar value and increases the emissions put into the atmosphere. The grapes which I purchase come in a plastic sort of zip lock bag so the use of recycled plastic in the packaging facilities is used frequently.

Granola Bars – A product I have been consuming since I was little and even till this present day as well. Granola consists of rolled oats, nuts, honey, and sometimes puffed rice. Another key ingredient which is used in this product and a majority of our meals we make is wheat. This is a cereal grain which is cultivated worldwide and is mainly grown in the prairie regions in Canada but also in other provinces such as BC, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. It is a simple crop that can be cultivated on a large scale including many machines which consume a lot of energy. With over 650 million tonnes of wheat produced each year, a lot of fossil fuels are used in cultivating such a popular crop. Wheat exporting has grown over the years as well allowing other regions to have access for their consumption. This wheat is then used in plants and mixed with other ingredients to make other products such as granola bars. These bars are made and packaged in a plastic wrapping and shipped nationwide for consumption.
