{"id":354,"date":"2014-01-22T21:26:24","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T04:26:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/maribo\/?p=354"},"modified":"2016-07-19T12:30:24","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T19:30:24","slug":"older-wiser-and-better-at-accumulating-carbon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/maribo\/2014\/01\/22\/older-wiser-and-better-at-accumulating-carbon\/","title":{"rendered":"Older, wiser and better at accumulating carbon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/onemansblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Muir-Woods-Giant-Redwood-Tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"302\" \/><em>by Meghan Beamish<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The other morning, while listening to NPR, I came across this story: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/01\/16\/262479807\/old-trees-grow-faster-with-every-year\">&#8220;An Old Tree Doesn&#8217;t Get Taller, But Bulks Up Like a Bodybuilder<\/a>.&#8221; It highlights a recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nature12914.html\"><em>Nature<\/em> paper<\/a> that was published last week by U.S. Geologic Survey forest ecologist Nate Stephenson. The paper addresses some blank spots in our knowledge of how tree growth rates change with age, and it concludes (after a global analysis of about 400 temperate and tropical tree species) that a tree&#8217;s growth rate actually increases with age.
